Part 1: Understanding and Managing High Conflict Personalities

IMPORTANT: This first part will be two 90-minute webinars and one 60-minute demonstration video, to be viewed at the participant’s convenience before the “livestream” Parts 2 & 3.

Section 1: 90 minutes
To work effectively with potentially high conflict clients, professionals must understand some of their different ways of thinking, feelings, and behavior. This webinar provides an overview of five high conflict personality disorders, their common behavior patterns, how to identify them, tips for working with them, and what NOT to do in working with them.

Section 2: 90 minutes
High conflict brain dynamics will be briefly explained, then the CARS Method® will be provided for managing high conflict individuals in any setting, including Connecting with Empathy, Attention and Respect; Analyzing Options, including Making Proposals; Responding to Misinformation including the BIFF Response®; and Setting Limits on high conflict behavior. The 4 Big Skills of all New Ways methods will be introduced: managed emotions, flexible thinking, moderate behavior, and checking yourself.

Section 3: 60 minutes
A demonstration video, titled Intro for Coaching with the Online Class, will introduce the online class and how to navigate around it. The content of the twelve class units will be explored, including class material, video clips, written practice exercises, and quizzes.

Part 2: Using the Coaching Manual and Coaching Exercise

Section 1: 90 minutes
The Coaching Manual will be introduced with explanations of the role of the coach as compared to that of a counselor, lawyer, and mediator. Setting up the coaching sessions will be addressed, including qualifications for coaches, whether to coach one or both parties, session structure, fees, confidentiality, dealing with other professionals involved in the case, and ethical limitations of coaching. Handling special issues will be addressed, including client resistance, domestic violence issues, and child alienation.

15 MINUTE BREAK

Section 2: 60 minutes
During this part of the training, we will practice the first coaching session, including setting it up, establishing your coaching relationship, discussing what the client has learned from the online class so far, reviewing the client’s writing, explaining and practicing “giving yourself encouraging statements,” and discussing how to apply this skill in the coming week.

15 MINUTE BREAK

Section 3: 60 minutes
We will debrief the first coaching session with feedback from each practice pair about what worked and what questions they have. Procedural issues, content issues, dealing with client resistance, and other issues will be discussed in preparation for the next coaching session.

Part 3: Coaching Exercises and Promoting Your Practice

Section 1: 90 minutes
We will practice doing Coaching session #2, with an emphasis on helping the client practice the 3-step method for Making Proposals using a hypothetical situation first, then applying this method with a real scenario that the client suggests. Then the coach and client will practice BIFF Responses and coaching for BIFF Responses.

15 MINUTE BREAK

Section 2: 60 minutes
We will practice doing Coaching session #3 as a last coaching session (keeping in mind that some coaches will be doing six or twelve sessions total). The coach will practice reviewing the client’s agenda of issues for discussion, making sure to reinforce all 4 Big Skills and including at least one more practice exercise with the client.

15 MINUTE BREAK

Section 3: 60 minutes
This final training session will include remaining questions about the method. Then we will discuss how to sign up for listing as a New Ways Coach with the Online Class on the High Conflict Institute website, tips for promoting your NWFF counseling practice, and how to work with court systems, judges, and lawyers for referrals.

1.  Identify the common conflict dynamics of five high conflict personality disorders.

2. Apply the four skills of the CARS Method for managing high conflict behavior.

3. Describe the 4 Big Skills that professionals teach in all New Ways for Families methods.

4. Describe how coaching clients can access and navigate the NWFF Online Class.

5. Apply the first three coaching sessions in the NWFF Coaching Manual.

6. Identify the important structuring role of judicial officers with high-conflict parents and use this understanding to facilitate clients’ participation in Coaching for the NWFF Online Class.

7. Apply methods for dealing with the resistance of high-conflict parents.

8. Identify the professional’s role of guiding clients in making proposals, responding to proposals and making their own lasting decisions in family law matters and use this understanding to create a supportive interdisciplinary approach to service delivery.

9. Apply methods of managing parent decision-making in the alternative dispute resolution processes of mediation, parenting facilitation, and collaborative practice.

10. Recognize the importance of all professionals for reinforcing client skills in managing future problems and discuss practical implications of such.
